00:00:00.098 --> 00:00:05.607
Well, hello and welcome back to Connect, Inspire, Create and Season 6.

00:00:06.889 --> 00:00:19.928
This podcast is where we dive into topics that empower you to live with intention, embrace your creativity and move forward with some ease and flow, some clarity and some joy.

00:00:20.530 --> 00:00:22.172
I am your host, Carol Clegg.

00:00:23.074 --> 00:00:41.338
A mindset and accountability coach working with women coaches, women entrepreneurs and small teams to shift that mindset just a little bit every day to create more joy and more happiness in your day, your relationships and your work.

00:00:41.597 --> 00:00:46.204
But today we're going to explore something that might just surprise you.

00:00:47.284 --> 00:00:50.909
Giving yourself permission to procrastinate.

00:00:51.521 --> 00:00:53.463
Now, I know you're thinking procrastination.

00:00:53.505 --> 00:00:57.890
Isn't that, we hear this so many times, the enemy of productivity?

00:00:58.610 --> 00:00:59.771
Well, not necessarily.

00:01:00.533 --> 00:01:10.846
What if I told you that procrastination could actually be a tool for relaxation, creativity, and even your productivity?

00:01:11.406 --> 00:01:12.709
So let's just explore.

00:01:13.750 --> 00:01:22.793
I know we've all had that feeling, that nagging feeling, probably pretty much every day, that we're not doing enough or not doing it fast enough.

00:01:23.814 --> 00:01:28.980
And procrastination is often painted as a bad habit, something that slows us down.

00:01:29.942 --> 00:01:32.646
It causes us stress and it makes us feel guilty.

00:01:33.087 --> 00:01:44.781
And I must admit, absolutely, and looking at this from a different point of view, it's not going to remove all of these other feelings when they do pop up.

00:01:44.993 --> 00:01:52.766
But we can take that opportunity sometimes, maybe frequently, maybe it's a habit that we could learn.

00:01:53.126 --> 00:01:55.671
But what if we reframe the mindset?

00:01:56.652 --> 00:02:13.217
What if there were certain days that you could just give yourself permission to procrastinate and not think of it as a way of, I'm going to avoid doing this, I don't want to touch this, but rather a way of actually recharging and recharging your mental and your emotional batteries.

00:02:14.258 --> 00:02:15.038
So here's the thing.

00:02:15.558 --> 00:02:25.489
When we give ourselves permission to procrastinate intentionally, we actually are opening the door to more clarity, focus and creativity.

00:02:26.129 --> 00:02:30.395
So let's just cover a couple of points and see if any of these resonate with you.

00:02:30.435 --> 00:02:34.639
And maybe this could just be something that you could give it a try.

00:02:35.580 --> 00:02:57.616
So let's just first look at some of the surprising benefits of procrastination when it's done with intention so enhanced creativity you've probably heard the term let's sleep on it i know that i like to do that with big decisions as always say let's just take 24 hours let me just ponder let me just think about this And sometimes the same thing.

00:02:57.656 --> 00:03:02.301
If you can step away from a task, you could have some new insight.

00:03:02.402 --> 00:03:09.793
So when you procrastinate with purpose, you can allow your mind to relax and then just process some ideas in the background.

00:03:10.693 --> 00:03:13.578
Maybe this is where some creative solutions can come up.

00:03:13.837 --> 00:03:16.421
Maybe this is an opportunity for a little mind mapping.

00:03:17.402 --> 00:03:25.193
So procrastination can actually be your brain's way of coming up with new ideas that you're not forcing yourself to focus on.

00:03:25.858 --> 00:03:33.230
And sometimes when we find yourself trying to work nonstop and your brain just feels like, oh, my goodness, I just I can't do this anymore.

00:03:33.270 --> 00:03:34.173
I'm running on empty.

00:03:34.873 --> 00:03:41.885
Well, taking a short break, a productive procrastination can actually give you a dose of success.

00:03:42.562 --> 00:03:45.507
don't know, maybe just a fresh perspective, a little bit of energy.

00:03:46.026 --> 00:03:51.816
So it's that whole giving ourselves permission because we so often beat ourselves up that we have to, should do.

00:03:51.855 --> 00:04:01.431
And no, we need to allow ourselves to tune in to what our body and our mind and our intuition really wants.

00:04:02.051 --> 00:04:10.284
So sometimes you come back to a space and you might actually make a better decision rather than making a quick one and go, oh, I need to get this done out of urgency.

00:04:10.384 --> 00:04:15.522
Perhaps you might find as you reflect back, ah, that was actually a better decision.

00:04:15.562 --> 00:04:20.012
So here's something just to think about, but you can be mindful.

00:04:20.172 --> 00:04:27.887
So it's not avoiding that responsibility or allow that long to-do list, the tasks to pile up, the chores at home.

00:04:27.906 --> 00:04:32.877
Oh my goodness, I need to get on top of this and it's really bugging me.

00:04:32.997 --> 00:04:35.410
But Here are some productive ways.

00:04:35.810 --> 00:04:42.345
So how about just setting, and you'll hear this time and time again, the baby steps, the setting small, achievable goals.

00:04:42.425 --> 00:04:49.480
Because honestly, if we break that overwhelming task down into the tiniest, tiniest step possible...

00:04:50.050 --> 00:04:51.913
The pressure is so much less.

00:04:52.754 --> 00:04:58.363
And once you start, often you say, I'm going to do this for five minutes and the five minutes turns into 30.

00:04:59.144 --> 00:05:04.074
So giving yourself permission just to take that baby step and see how it goes.

00:05:04.654 --> 00:05:06.478
And then this is an important one.

00:05:07.019 --> 00:05:12.687
Procrastination can be a sign that you just need to take care of yourself.

00:05:13.490 --> 00:05:14.531
So let me say that again.

00:05:14.591 --> 00:05:15.653
Procrastination.

00:05:16.225 --> 00:05:28.906
Thank you so much for joining us.

00:05:37.793 --> 00:05:44.684
with the sun on my face, and I'm going to just enjoy this moment doing absolutely nothing.

00:05:44.723 --> 00:05:51.634
And by just giving myself permission to be there instead of saying, oh, get to work, you need to get to work.

00:05:52.735 --> 00:06:03.310
I am, I'm starting today with a real positive mindset, a real positive, yeah, just excited for what's going to unfold today.

00:06:03.350 --> 00:06:16.504
So you can also, When I think about this, because I have my little, I know people call the Poma Dora technique, but I do just have a little timer and I don't do that all the time.

00:06:16.584 --> 00:06:29.380
I don't set the timer for the entire day, but I do set that for, for instance, this morning, I wanted to work on some tasks for my business and I set it for 30 minutes and I did just that.

00:06:29.742 --> 00:06:32.545
Will I go back and turn the timer on later this afternoon?

00:06:33.105 --> 00:06:41.721
Maybe, but even just using it, to keep you focused for a period of time to just balance things out and to get things done.

00:06:41.860 --> 00:06:46.206
So bringing that back in is remembering to celebrate.

00:06:47.047 --> 00:06:52.713
Yeah, so recently I did, I had such a long list of things that I wanted to get done last week.

00:06:53.074 --> 00:07:05.047
And I just, instead of pushing myself to tick them off, which I enjoy doing that, I have an app on my phone called TickTick where I put the most, pressing things on there.

00:07:05.867 --> 00:07:12.274
I just gave myself permission to procrastinate and I started exploring and I went, wow, this is quite different.

00:07:12.293 --> 00:07:23.785
I am focused now today on what I want to get done, but it just brought such a sense of ease and flow and just, yeah, I just found it empowering.

00:07:24.045 --> 00:07:25.206
I wrote a blog post.

00:07:25.547 --> 00:07:29.911
You'll see that on my LinkedIn profile for my newsletter.

00:07:30.430 --> 00:07:31.952
And it just took me in so many directions.

00:07:31.992 --> 00:07:33.213
And then I thought, well, why not?

00:07:33.505 --> 00:07:35.367
record an episode for the podcast.

00:07:35.468 --> 00:07:38.651
So really just something to contemplate.

00:07:38.692 --> 00:07:41.935
Procrastination doesn't have to be your enemy.

00:07:42.154 --> 00:07:46.180
So look at it as just giving yourself permission to use it mindfully.

00:07:46.220 --> 00:07:56.310
So there are times that you're going to want to knuckle down, put the timer on, start with the baby steps, but there are times that you can give yourself permission.

00:07:56.430 --> 00:08:00.855
So next time you feel the urge to procrastinate, don't beat yourself up.

00:08:01.396 --> 00:08:03.771
Just remember that it's not about avoiding.

00:08:03.810 --> 00:08:11.259
It's about taking a moment to recharge, contemplate and come back from a place of ease and clarity.

00:08:11.579 --> 00:08:15.185
So thank you for joining me today on Connect, Inspire, Create.

00:08:15.204 --> 00:08:25.117
And I hope this episode has helped you just rethink procrastination a little and perhaps find a time in your week that you can turn it into a tool that serves you rather than holds you back.

00:08:25.937 --> 00:08:31.504
And I will be back next week with a guest, my first guest for season six.

00:08:32.258 --> 00:08:38.365
And while we're talking about firsts, I'm excited to say that I will be launching my new program.

00:08:38.424 --> 00:08:44.673
It's a group combined with one-on-one coaching using the positive intelligence method.

00:08:44.692 --> 00:08:46.214
It's 90 days long.

00:08:46.695 --> 00:09:01.972
And if you head on over either to my website at carolclague.com or I'll pop a link in the show notes, this is the perfect place if you find yourself pouring into others, you have your list of tools, you know what you're meant to be doing.

00:09:02.033 --> 00:09:06.278
But often as coaches, we do not take care of ourselves.

00:09:06.378 --> 00:09:13.285
So if you want to join me for 90 days, I'd love to have you on board and all the details are in the show notes.

00:09:13.405 --> 00:09:23.658
So until then, just remember to be kind to yourself, give yourself permission to pause and keep creating from a place of joy and peace.

00:09:23.678 --> 00:09:26.481
So until the next episode, thanks for listening.
